Mistake

Honey Lauren
United States, 2026, 123 min.

In English.
Includes nudity.

1941, a child is born between the sexes, and the family must choose, boy or girl? The doctors call it adrenogenital syndrome… intersex… sexually ambiguous. Mother calls it Devil’s work. With hormone treatment, Larry is raised a man. The deep south is anything but an understanding environment in which to realize that a mistake has been made. Larry’s mother loves him, knowing his… difference. Her sister, Aunt Peg, knows he would have a better chance in California. Lily, herself different, loves Larry. Larry’s father, wanted a son. Mistake explores gender intimately, while telling a story of alienation, identity, and love.

Director's Statement

When I first started down this road to get Mistake produced, it was reported that 1 in 5000 babies were born Intersex. About three months before we started shooting, I saw that the numbers changed, now 1 in 1500, (That would make intersex as common as red hair). I myself was born with differences. I have come to learn that under this expanded definition that would include ”a difference in sex linked traits or anatomy", that my differences fall under this umbrella of “’what is intersex’. We are indeed attracted to what we are.
