Special Jury Award for Creative Storytelling
The story of three brothers, and a people's rebellion to defend their river. A story of folklore, courage and heroism; of nature's exuberant landscapes and a magical connection between grandfather and grandson, all lit by the phases of the moon in the night sky. Social events interwoven with magical realism, beautifully filmed in Veracruz, Mexico.
Director's Statement
A tribute to a people and their cultures. As chronicles intertwine, we feel the frustration of trying to survive an oppressive political system -- one whose consequences and scars remain forever. We long for the protagonists to be saved, and admire their fortitude. Like them, we see the soul of the river, fall in love with the torrent of water and try to help it at all costs. A unique telling of a universal drama, Black Moon is dedicated to the courage of those who still dream despite living on the margins for decades.
