You Are Here

Nicholas Jones
United Kingdom, 2018, 16 min.

You Are Here is a portrait of Tony Rogers, a rock star who is a member of one of the most successful British bands of the last 20 years, The Charlatans. Despite the glitz and glamour of fame, Tony has found a calling in working on his family land in Ireland. As we observe Tony through a year on the farm we engage with why he chooses to live in this wet, cold and difficult world.

Director's Statement

Filming You Are Here was a very intimate experience. Shot across a year I was given access to the cycle of life on a farm, which was fascinating, difficult and emotional. Tony's double life intrigued me. I wanted to know how he was able to be both a rock star and a farmer at the same time. Was one side of his character more dominant? Was he a farmer playing at being a musician? or a musician playing at being a farmer? Tony gave me complete access into his world, which resulted in some more deeper philosophical thoughts to emerge in the film. Tony farms traditionally, the way his ancestors have since the 1500's. This traditional way of farming is sadly in danger of not existing, he makes no money from it and states that he "does it just for fun". Tony could be the last generation to practice farming in this traditional way.
