Swimming With Wings

Daphna Awadish Golan
Netherlands, 2023, 10 min.

In Dutch, Hebrew, English with Dutch, Hebrew, English subtitles.
This film is family friendly.

A short animated documentary exploring the immigration experience through the eyes of a little Israeli girl learning how to swim with clothes on in the Netherlands.

Director's Statement

“Learning how to swim” answered Lyri when I asked her what is the most difficult thing for her in the Netherlands. Lyri is a 6 year old girl from Israel who immigrated to the Netherlands with her family. I expected to hear longings for her friends in Israel, her grandmother far away, the incoherent language, but I heard only four words “Learning how to swim”. Dutch children learn swimming at an early age at the pool nearby but in a completely different way: They jump into the water fully dressed, even with their shoes on!
