The documentary Expecting Sunshine brings to life the award-winning, bestselling memoir by author/filmmaker Alexis Marie Chute, called "Expecting Sunshine: A Journey of Grief, Healing and Pregnancy After Loss." The film welcomes viewers into an intimate experience of an actual subsequent pregnancy of the filmmaker following the death of her newborn son, Zachary, at birth from Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. The documentary brings viewers along on real-life medical appointments, introduces them to other bereaved parents and medical professionals through thought-provoking interviews, right through to the delivery room where Chute welcomes her rainbow baby, the name given by bereaved parents to their child(ren) born after their loss. It is a heartbreaking story, but also one filled with love and hope.

Director's Statement

The documentary Expecting Sunshine exposes the unseen emotional and psychological challenges of grief, specifically those of bereaved parents, like myself. Losing my son was my greatest heartbreak and it transformed who I am as an author, filmmaker, and artist. About a year after my loss, I knew this universal story must be shared; that too many suffer in silence after they have said goodbye to their child, left looking for hope, support, and education. That is the need filled by Expecting Sunshine. I have curated the interviews and my own experience into an artistic presentation that will live on in the minds of viewers. With poignant narration about the grief and healing journey, Expecting Sunshine casts fresh light on a private and isolating experience, with the message that love never dies.
