Be Calm and Count to 7

Ramtin Lavafi - Iran

In a remote costal village in southern Iran, smuggling is the primary means of livelihood. But the sparking blue-green waters can be stormy, and small boats are at risk.

A few days earlier, Motoo’s father left with passengers. Dreaming of becoming a soccer star, Motoo waits with his sister and pregnant mother for his father’s return.

Using narrative techniques associated with documentary filmmaking, this tense drama couples a set of finely-drawn characters with a compelling and varied landscape. The sparse dialogue gently discloses a traditional society under siege. Political instability and a consumption-driven world demand a heavy toll, especially from the poor and the young.

Born in southern Iran, director Ramtin Lavafi studied film making at the IRIB University in Tehran. His film credits include documentaries and short films, for which he has received several awards. This is his first feature film, and it has been well-received at numerous screenings around the world.
